The Turbo-Union RBI99 engines which powered the first two EF2000s have now been replaced by EJ200s, while additional EF2000s have now flown with EJ200s. The third development aircraft is due to fly with the initial production-standard 03A engines in September 1997. The 03 A has a new full-authority digital engine-control which Eurojet is confident will improve the engine's reliability. ITP, which is responsible for the EJ200 noz zle, is planning to test an axisymmetric thrust- vectoring nozzle in early 1998, while MTU is designing a compressor with 10% increased fan-flow, which is designed to raise the engine's thrust by 15% to 72kN (rated at 103kN with reheat). Following the 747-X cancellation in January 1997, discussions continued with Airbus on an A3XX powerplant, but Boeing plans for a 333,700kg gross-weight777-200X have now prompted the Alliance partnership to look at a higher-thrust engine. P&W will be responsible for the 2.8m-diameter fan, low-pressure (LP) compressor and LP turbine; and GE the high- pressure (HP) compressor, combustor and HP turbine.
