The -8C1 has scaled-down versions of CF6-80E1 wide-chord blades. The Kevlar fan-containment ring has been thickened after testing, and blade-out con tainment tests will take place late in 1998. Tests in May 1997 verified combustor characteristics and testingwith an optimised compressor is tak ing place ahead of full engine tests. US certifi cation is expected in the fourth quarter of 1999. New 3 lOkN CF6-80E1A4 turbofans pow ered the Airbus A330-200 on its first flight in August. GE is offering to incorporate a new Rene 88 turbine into existing CF6-80C2s and CF6-80Els from May 2000. By eliminating bolted joints from disk rims, GE says thrust capability will increase by 2 %. Flight tests of die GE90-90B "Block 4" were completed in September 1997 on the Boeing The GE CF34 turbofan powers the Canadair CRJ 777-200IGW (increased gross-weight). A simpified dual-annular combustor and other improvements make the variant some 37kg lighter. The 777-200IGW entered service in February 1997 with GE90-92Bs. GE is offering the GE90-100B derivative for the proposed Airbus A3XX, as an alternative to the all-new GP7000 (see General Electric-Pratt & Whittle)' Engine Alliance). GE is co-developing die growth, 1,860kW T700/T6E turboshaft with Italy's Alfa Romeo Avio and Fiat Avio. It is the first T700 with FADEC. Altitude testing was completed suc cessfully earlier in September 1997, and the first flight-test engine will be delivered to NH Industries in late 1997 for installation on the NH90, for which Germany's MTU Munich will co-produce the engines. A commercial ver sion, die GT7-8, will power the Sikorsky S-92, with flight testing beginning in late 1998. Atur- boprop version, die CT7-11, is being studied for potential growth versions of die CASA/IPTN CN2 3 5, Let L610 and Saab 340. GEand Rolls-Royce/Allison areconsidering a joint military-engine group, similar to CFMI, aimed specifically at the US/UK Joint Strike Fighter programme, for which the diree com panies are developing the YF120. GE would hold 60%, Allison 20% and R-R 20%.
