Hit a ridge at 600ft AMSL about lkm south of destination airport Fagalii while attempting a visual approach in heavy rain with low cloudbase. 9 January Comair Embraer Brasilia (N265CA) Nr Ida. 40km S of Detroit, Michigan, USA 3/26 3/26 AA toss of control in level flight at 4.000ft in cloud while reducing speed for further descent into Detroit Metropolitan Airport. Uncommanded left roll started with aircraft in clean configuration at about 150kt. and continued despite opposite aileron input from the autopilot. NTSB reports now suggest that staiboardengine overspeed may have started the sequence of events, and that the crew attempted to shut the engine down and operate the fire-extinguisher. There is no evidence of tire or of propeller failure, the NTSB says. Roll rate rapidly increased and took the aircraft from 40'to 145' bank in 2s. Aircraft pitched-down through 50'. stall- warning activated, autopilot disengaged and control was not regained. 23 January Hapa Aviation Crashed on high terrain. CNK. Cessna 210 (V5-NIH) Naukluft Mt, Namibia 1/4 1/4 31 January Skypower Express Airways Embraer Bandeirante (5N-AXS) Yola approach, Yola, Nigeria 3/2 3/13 RA Hit trees and power-lines 800m from runway threshold and right of the extended centreline while making third approaching attempt in dust haze during the day. 10 February Air Sunshine Cessna 402C (N318AB) Sea near St Thomas, US Virgin Islands 1/1? 2/? AA Dived into sea on approach to St Thomas. Pilot had reported hydraulic problems. One passenger reported missing. 2 March Chapi Air Travel Cessna 402A (YV-784) ?, Venezuela 1/5 1/5 ER The aircraft disappeared on a Venezuelan domestic flight from Simon Bolivar Airport. Caracas, to Gran Roques. Debhs believed to have come from the aircraft was found in the sea 90km north of Caracas. 18 March Stavropolskaya Aktsioneraya Avia Antonov Arv24RV IRA46516) S Chechnya, Russia 8/42 8/42 ER Aircraft lost contact in the cruise at 17.700ft en route Stavropol. Chechnya, to Trabzon. northern Turkey, and wreckage of the 1967'-built aircraft was found widely spread with the tail section well separated from the rest. The aircraft had recently been on extended charter in the Congo and. on return, major maintenance work had been earned out on the tail section. 10 April Hageland Aviation Services Cessna Skywagon (N4086V) Wainwright. Alaska, USA Filed VFR for a Barrow-Wainwright schedule when the en route weather was overcast at 500ft AGL Crashed on sea ice near Wainwright. 1/4 1/4 ER 19 April Merpati Nusantara BAe ATP (PK-MTX) Nr Buluh Tumbang Airport, Belitung. Indonesia 4/11 5/48 The aircraft crashed into a coconut plantation on final approach some 6km sliort of the runway in good weather. Passenger reports suggest that both propellers were feathered shortly before impact. 6 June Bazair Vickers Viscount 700 (9Q£WL) Nr Bunia, Zaire Having taken off from Bunia for Kisangani, the pilot reported technical problems and the aircraft crashed some 40km west of Bunia. 7/20 7/20 10 June Mongolian Airlines Harbin Y-12 Madalgobi Airport, Mongolia Crashed on approach, coming to a halt a few hundred metres short of the runway, where it burst into tlames. -P 2/10 RA 9 July Transportes Aereos Regionais Fokker 100 (PT-WHK) ER. Nr Suzano. Brazil -/l 5/55 ER About 8min after takeoff from Sao Jose dos Campos, as the aircraft climbed througli 8.000ft. there was an explosion in the rear cabin which blew a 2m square hole in the hull and a passenger fell out of it. Police believe that the explosion was deliberately caused by a passenger in a suicide attempt. 11 July Cubana Antonov An-24RV (CU-T1262) In sea off Santiago. Cuba Just after the night take-off in fair weather on a scheduled service to Havana, the aircraft crashed into the sea. 5/39 5/39 17 July SempatiAir Fokker F27-600 (PK-YPM) Cicukang Village. Nr Bandung. Indonesia 5/25 5/45 C Evidence suggests that there was an engine failure shortly after takeoff from Bandung, and the pilot attempted to land at the nearby Sulaiman air force base. The aircraft came to rest in fields about 200m short of the Sulaiman runway. 18 July Goroka Air Service DHC-6 Twin Otter 300 (P2-MMU) Nr Goroka, Papua New Guinea 1/1 1/3 AA 7he aircraft was carrying out a GPS let-down in IMC to an airfield which has no radio navigation aids and is positioned high in hilly terhtory. It is not certain that either the pilot or aircraft was equipped for flight in IMC. 30 July Air Littoral AI(R) ATR 42 (FGPYE) Peretola Airport. Florence. Italy !/• 3/14 L Inbound on a schedule from Nice, the pilot touched down fast and long on nmway 23. There was a 5kt tailwind. and the aircraft bounced twice. The runway has a 1.030m landing distance available. The aircraft overran through the perimeter fence. 10 August Formosa Airlines Dornier 228-200 (B-12256) Pishu Hill, Nr Matsu, Taiwan 2/14 2/14 [ The aircraft hit a low hill about lkm from the airport followiiig a visual go-around from an approach in rain. The hill is to the left of the runway's extended centreline, whereas the missed-approach procedure demands a right turn. 14 August Airnorth Central Cessna 210 (VHPJQ) Nr Katherine. N. Territory. Australia 1/4 The aircraft crashed out of control after contact was lost while on the base leg of its approach to Tindal Airport, Katherine. Some reports suggest fuel exhaustion followed by a stall. 29 August SATENA Pilaws Turbo-Porter (VH-PJQ) Nr Puerto Inirida, Colombia The pilot reported an "emergency", and the aircraft came down about 5km from the airfield. 2/7 1/4 2/7 31 August Aero Condor Cessna T206F (OB-1079) NrNazca. Peru 1/5 1/5 The aircraft was carrying tourists on a sightseeing flight over the Nazca Lines at dusk in good weather when it collided with another Cessna T206 doing the same thing (see next entry). 31 August AeroParacas CessnaT206G (OB-1450) NrNazca. Peru 175 1/5 77ie aircraft was carrying tourists on a sightseeing tlight over the Nazca Lines at dusk in good weather when it collided with another Cessna T206 doing the same thing (see previous entry). 3 September Vietnam Airlines TupolevTul34(VN-A120) Nr Pochentong Airport. Phnom Penh. Cambodia 6/59 Inbound on a flight from Ho Chi Minh City, the aircraft crashed about 300m shor t of the runway in daylight with heavy rain during the pilot's second attempt to land. 6 September Merpati Inian Dornier22*200(9MMIA) LambirHills. Miri, Malaysia 2/8 Inbound on a tlight from Bandar Sen Begawan. the aircraft crashed into a hill at the 1.250ft level about 14km short of the runway at night, but in good visibility. 8 October Scenic Airlines Cessna Caravan I (N12022) 38km SW of Montrose, Colorado, USA 1/8 Apparent loss of control in daylight VMC while climbing through 15.400ft AMSL. Hit the ground at the 9,900ft level in a rather flat attitude with little forward speed. 29 October CNK. Ariana Afghan Yakovlev Yak-40 (YAKAE) Jalalabad. Afghanistan /I 6/60 2/8 1/8 ?/? 8 November Hageland Aviation Cessna Caravan I (N750GC) Crashed into sea shortly after night takevff. A Mayday call was made. CNK. Canada Crashed on an approach in freezing rain and fog. the aircraft coming to rest short of the runway. 1/3 2/15 13 December Servicios y Transportes Aereos (STAP) Fairchild Metro II (CP-1635) La Veriente. Bolivia Crashed 300m beyond runway end on a charter bound for Santa Cruz. Believed to have involved engine failure. 1/9 2/17 31 December Island Air Pilatus B-N Islander (?) Nr San Bias. Flew into power lines while positioning (or a night appioach with visibility about 700m in fog. The local NOB let-down is not approved for night use. 29 January South Central Air DHC-4A Caribou (N702SC) Nr Sparrevohn, Alaska, USA 1 2 ER Right engine was shut down because of propeller overspeed. Could not maintain height, so crew diverted to Sparrevohn strip, a one-way daylight-only runway. Severe turbulence in the lee of nearby mountains disturixd the night-approach attempt and the aircraft hit a snowcovered slope. 4 March Air Georgian Cessna Caravan I (C-FESJ) Barne-Orillia. Ontario, Canada Loss of control during daylight instrument approach to runway 28. Crash landed short of runway. Initial inspection found icing on wings. RA 12 March AirNacoia Antonov An-12 (D2-FVG) Lukapa Airport.
