AIR TRANSPORT El Al turns to Airbus to solve temporary crisis EL AL IS IN discussions to acquire its first Airbus aircraft, three months after deciding against an Ai rbus narrowbody pur chase, instead selecting the Next Generation Boeing 737. The Israeli national airline, which operates an all-Boeing fleet, is in negotiations to lease two Airbus A330-200s for at least two years. The airline has an urgent need for 250-seat aircraft to oper ate alongside its 767-200s, to be operated on direct long haul ser vices to destinations such as Chicago and Hong Kong. El Al wants to introduce die air craft by early 1999 and according to El Al's vice-president engineer ing, Arie Fruchter, additional 767s were initially considered, but none were available in die required time frame. "We are now in negotia tions for two A3 3 0-2 00s and hope to finalise a deal soon," he says. Although El Al has not disclosed the source for the aircraft, it is understood that Airbus is assisting the airline in locating some of the A3 30s. International Lease Finance, which is the only leasing company with the A3 30-200 on order, is believed not to have air craft available in the timeframe, making it possible that they could arrive from, or via, an existing air line customer. In parallel with the search for aircraft, El Al is already discussing with Airbus arrangements for crew and engineer training. Later this year, El Al will begin the selection process for a new long range 350-seat aircraft, with the Boeing 777 and Airbus A340 in the running for a five-aircraft order • Air Nostrum selects CRJ for expansion AIR NOSTRUM has selected the Canadair Regional Jet (CRJ) for its fleet expansion and concluded a deal with Bombardier for up to ten aircraft. The Spanish regional airline, based in Valencia, has placed a firm orderworth C$153.5 million($108 million) for five CRJ-200ERs, with options on a further five. The air line will start CRJ operations at the end of the month with aircraft on interim lease. These will be replaced by the new aircraft from the second quarter of 1999. Air Nostrum began a commer cial partnership with Iberia during 1997, and operates regional ser vices under franchise to the nation al carrier. The CRJs will be incorporated into the franchise business, replacing larger jets now operated by Iberia on some of its low density, medium haul routes. The airline operates 16 Fokker 50s and four Aero International (Regional) ATR 72s. The intro duction of the CRJs, along with more turboprops, will see the fleet grow to 27 aircraft by mid-1999. • TWA raises fresh cash as 747 flights end TRANS WORLD AIRLINES has completed its latest $ 150 mil lion private debt placement. At the same time, TWA completed another phase of its fleet renewal programme with the phasing out on 20 February of its last Boeing 747 (above), after 28 years.
