In conjunction with its codeshare partners, Continental serves 400 cities in the Americas, Europe and Asia. It has entered into a strategic global alliance with Northwest Airlines that will interconnect the two airlines' route systems, codesharing arrangements, frequent flyer reciprocity, co-operation between Continental and Northwest's tansatlantic partner KLM, and other cooperative activities. History Began in 1934 as Varney Speed Lines, taking its present name in 1937. Texas Air, parent company of Texas International Airlines, acquired a controlling interest in Continental. The two concerns were amalgamated on 31 October, 1982, and continued to operate under the Continental banner. In September 1983. Continental filed for protection under Chapter 11, a plan of reorganisation was filed with the US bankruptcy court in 1985 and the airline emerged a year later from Chapter 11 protection. The operations of the People Express Group and New York Air were merged into Continental and the airline again filed for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11, re-emerging in May 1993. Continental was granted US DOT approval to operate to Tokyo from both Houston and Newark, on 13 February, 1998. The airline will begin a daily non-stop Newark-Tokyo service from November 1998.
