History The CAAC was formed shortly after the foundation of the People's Republic of China in October 1949. It ceased being a carrier in its own right in 1988, when it was split into five state-owned regional airlines, China Eastern (Shanghai). China Southern (Guangzhou), China Southwest (Chengdu), China Northern (Shenyang), China Northwest (Xi'an). plus the flag carrier Air China. A large number of independent airlines have also been established across China, mainly owned by municipal authorities or large industrial companies. Some of these still report to the CAAC, and must obtain CAAC approval for routes and aircraft orders. In 1993, the three largest of the former CAAC divisions, Air China. China Southern and China Eastern, were established as independent aviation groups, with authority for their own aircraft purchases and finances. The CAAC still continues to order aircraft on behalf of most Chinese airlines, through its purchasing body. China Aviation Supplier.
