CORPORATE AND GENERAL AVIATION | WINNERS Israel Aircraft Industries and Galaxy Aerospace ACHIEVEMENT Entry into service of the Galaxy super mid-size business jet 1 The entry into service of the Galaxy intercontinental business jet last year pioneered a new category of business aircraft - the super mid-size jet. Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) and Galaxy Aerospace are ahead of the field in this new market segment, with competing manufacturers now following their lead. This market segment is gearing up to be a major area of industry growth over the next decade. The Galaxy's order book is approaching $1 billion and has a backlog of more than two years. The judges considered the Galaxy an impressive aircraft, with an intercontinental capability and a four-passenger instrument flight rules range of 6,700km (3,620nm), allowing the aircraft to fly non-stop from Paris to New York, for example. The Galaxy boasts interior dimensions similar to those of traditional large cat egory business jets, with a cabin height of 1.91m (6ft 3in) and a cabin width of 2.18m. lAI/Galaxy Aerospace claims that operating costs are lower than those of some mid-size jets, with the aircraft priced between the mid-size and large business jet segments. The Galaxy was available to the market in unprecedented speed for a business aircraft programme, according to the manufacturer. Joint certification by the US Federal Aviation Administration and Israel's aviation authority was completed less than a year after the aircraft's first flight and less than two years after full-scale produc tion and certification efforts were launched. In 1999 the first Galaxy in service met or improved upon its design goals for range, speed, runway performance and operational economies. Galaxy deliveries arc one per month now, rising to two per month by mid-year. The judges commended lAI/Galaxy for producing an aircraft that meets a new market need.
