Founder member of the Star Alliance Date established 10 April, 1937 Date operations started iSeptember. 1937 Description Canada's flagship air carrier. The airline's route network, including regional airline subsidiaries, provides services to over 120 destinations worldwide, with a combined fleet of 240 aircraft. Together with its Star Alliance partners. Air Canada offers its customers over 700 destinations in more than 110 countries. History Established as Trans-Canada Airlines (TCA), starting with mail flights between Vancouver and Seattle. By 1964, TCA had grown to become Canada's national airline and changed its name to Air Canada. In July 1989, it became fully privatised Air Canada capitalised on the 1995 Canada-USA Open Skies agreement and provides more non-stop services between Canada and the USA than any other carrier or alliance, with a total of 1.300 weekly flights to 42 destinations in the USA. At the end of 1999. the Canadian government relaxed some aviation regulations, to consolidate the Canadian airline industry. A takeover battle ensued for Air Canada, with Canadian investment company Onex (backed by Canadian Airlines' shareholder American Airlines) trying to take over Air Canada, and amalgamate it into Canadian Airlines. This failed because of the maximum ownership rules set for Air Canada. The airline subsequently lauched a takeover bid for Canadian Airlines. The Canadian Airlines shareholders. including American Airlines, agreed to sell their shares to Air Canada, and in January 2000, Air Canada announced that it owned 82% of Canadian Airlines.
