Operations began with daily non-stop flights to New York and Miami, with long-haul services to Europe added on 1 April, 1974. In 1983, the Air Jamaica Maintenance department qualified as an Approved Maintenance Organisation - the first Caribbean airline to achieve this distinction. The carrier was partially privatised in 1994, with the Jamaican Government retaining a 25% share in the company. Air Jamaica has since undergone an extensive modernisation process, including the purchase of new aircraft.
