Pacific Coastal Airlines, Pern Air, Qantas Airways, Regionair, Sahara Airlines, Wasaya Airways Date established 27 March, 1987 Description Canada's second airline, operating to 109 destinations within Canada, as well as serving international destinations in the USA, Asia, Europe, the South Pacific and South America. History Established through the amalgamation of Canadian Pacific Air Lines, Eastern Provincial Airways, Nordair and Pacific Western Airlines. Wardair was incorporated in 1989. Between 1991 and 1994 Canadian Airlines streamlined its operations, initiated a voluntary financial restructuring and negotiated an agreement with AMR that included an equity investment by AMR. At the end of 1999. the Canadian Government relaxed some of the aviation regulations, aimed at facilitating a consolidation of the Canadian airline industry. A takeover battle ensued for Air Canada, with Canadian investment company Onex (backed by Canadian Airlines' shareholder American Airlines) trying to take over Air Canada, and amalgamate it into Canadian Airlines. This failed because of the maximum ownership rules set for Air Canada, and Air Canada subsequently lauched a successful takeover bid for Canadian Airlines, completed in January 2000 and giving it a 82% stake.
