History The original Pan Am ceased operations in 1991 after 64 years ot service. Martin Shugrue and Charles Cobb, a former US Ambassador to Iceland bought the PanAm trademark in 1993. and the airline started trading again in 1996. On 26 September, 1997, Pan Am completed the purchase of Carnival Air Lines, merging the two airlines under the Pan Am name and prefix. During February 1998, Pan Am tiled for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11 and ceased scheduled operations on 27 February, 1998, while its parent company (Pan Am) sought outside sources ot financing. The charter section of the airline restarted services in March. Outside financing from the Guilford Group was secured and approved in May 1998. allowing Pan Am to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on 29 June, 1998. The airline resumed scheduled services on 7 October, 1999.
