Key to this is the purchase of 1.213 RAI1-66 ComancheS by 2024. Meanwhile, the remain ing AH-IF Cobras will be retired in FY01 with OH-5SAs, OII-58C.S and UH-ls following in FY04. Nine hundred U I-oOAs will be upgraded to UH-60L+ from FY03, with further examples acquired at the rate of 26 a year to FY05. A further 557 Black Hawks will become LI [-60Q Dust-Off medevac machines. If a suitable engine can be identified by die (ommon Engine Programme, the 255 UH-60L-S will be further upgraded to UH-60X from 2008. Also 300CH-47s will be modified to C11-47F standard by 2013. The latter should be replaced by the Future Transport Rotorcraft from 2020. Sixhundred Apaches will be modified to Al 1-641) stan dard, the majority of which will be fitted with the Longbow radar.' 1 he Improved Cargo 1 lelicopter/CH-47F- standard Chinook will get an engine upgrade, airframe strengthening and a partial glass cockpit. First flight of a CH- 47F prototype is set for April 2001. Boeing is to deliver die first production ICIT Chinooksin 2002. The plan is to mod ify 26 CH-47Ds a year through 2013. The special forces A11 - 6J/MI1-6J are to be further upgraded by Boeing under the Mission Enhanced Little Bird (MF.I.B) programme. They will conduct clandestine missions until replaced by the RW- X rotorcraft in die 2015-18 timeframe. I he MEI.B combines die six-bladed rotor system of the M 1)600 with a four-1 iladed tail rotor. The second RAI 1-66 Comanche prototype flew in 1999 with the second Hying in 2000. Aside from the two pro totypes, the I'S Army will build six "early operational capa- bility"aircraftfrom 2003 for early field trials followed by eight aircraft which will be delivered for operational evaluation tri als in 2004 and 2005. Replacement of many of the fixed wing ' types is included in the Aerial Common Sensor Platform pro- gramme. Upto80aircraft are required to replace RC-12s and RC-7s from 2009. Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon received study contracts in May 2000. Todays limited combat capability is provided b] ex -I SAFA-37B Dragonflys, a handful of.Argentine built Pucaras and armed PC-7s.
