British Airways is one of the founding partners of the oneworld alliance which now includes American Airlines, Aer Lingus, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, LanChile, and Oantas. History British Airways can trace its origins back to the pioneering days following World War I, when on 25 August 1919 one of its forerunner company, Aircraft Transport and Travel Limited (AT&T), launched the world's first daily international scheduled air service between London and Paris. On 31 March 1924, Imperial Airways was established through the amalgamation of Handley Page Transport, Instone Air Line, Daimler Airways and British Marine Navigation. Imperial Airways established the eastern Empire routes and also pushed through into Africa, before it was merged with British Airways, formed on 30 September 1935 to operate domestic and European routes, under the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) name, which became effective 1 April 1940. The British European Airways (BEA) division was formed on 1 January 1946 to develop the European network. BOAC operated the world's first scheduled jet service with the Comet 1 between London and Johannesburg. BEA and BOAC were merged on 1 April 1972 under the British Airways name. 1987 saw the controversial take-over of British Caledonian Airways and a share flotation, which helped to make the airline into one of the most successful in the world.
