During the Second World War the Egyptian Government took charge of the airline, and its name was changed to Misr Air in 1949. In January 1961, Misr Air joined with Syrian Airways to form United Arab Airlines (UAA) as a result of new political links between Egypt and Syria, but this accord was short-lived and Misr Air pulled out. It retained the name for a short time until changed to Egyptair in October 1971. History Established as the national flag-carrier of the newly established State of Israel, and officially began operations with a service from Tel Aviv to Rome and Paris, extended a year later to London. Non-stop Tel Aviv-New York services were introduced on 15 June 1961, when its Boeing 707 set the world record for the longest non stop commercial flight covering 5,760 statute miles in 9 hours, 33 minutes. In 1991, an El Al Boeing 747 airlifted 1,087 Ethiopian Jews out of Addis Ababa to Israel as part of Operation Solomon. El Al finally left the technical receivership it had been operating under since 1982, in February 1995. Privatisation plans have been postponed several times.
