The carrier was forced to cease operations for over one month, when political troubles led to a ban on domestic flights. Lionvert sold its stake in late 1997. At that time the airline was seeking government approval to launch international services. On 30 September 1998, Lionair suspended domestic services after one of its Antonov An-24s went missing shortly after take-off from Jaffna. Operations have not yet recommenced.
