History TAM-Bolivia was granted a six month operating permit by the Bolivian government on 7 April 2000 and announced it would begin operations towards the end of August using two Fokker 100s. However, fol lowing a strike by about 2,000 pilots in Bolivia on 30 May that brought domestic services to a halt, the Bolivian government suspended TAM-Bolivia's permit pending the outcome of a governmental review. The Bolivian pilots' union says they staged the industrial action because TAM-Bolivia has not completed the legal process required to obtain a commercial permit to operate. Others believe that that action took place becauseTAM-Bolivia represented a potential threat to Lloyd Aereo Boliviano, the flag-carrier, and Bolivia's 10 other scheduled and non-scheduled carriers. In late June TAM-Bolivia opened merger talks with existing Bolivian operator Aerosur in an attempt to resolve the situation.
