SH Services scheduled, international, regional, domestic, passenger Parent organisation/shareholders Government ot Thai (93%) Alliances Satr Alliance, Druk Air, El Al, Emirates, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, South African Airways, Swissair Date established 24 August 1959 Date operations started 1 May 1960 Description Thailand's flag-carrier serving 73 destinations in 35 countries in Asia/Pacific, Europe, the Middle East and North America. Member of the Star Alliance. History Established as a joint venture between Thailand's domestic carrier Thai Airways Company and SAS Scandinavian Airlines, which took a 30% stake, to operate international services. Operations began between Bangkok and nine points within South East Asia. The carrier's first intercontinental flight took place in April 1971 to Sydney, with European services, initially to Copenhagen, added on 3 June 1972. The SAS holding and influence gradually reduced and the airline became wholly-owned by government on 1 April 1977. Thai Airways International and Thai Airways merged on 1 April 1988, obtaining sole authority for international and domestic scheduled services. In 1992, the company's shares were listed on the Securities Exchange of Thailand, as a precursor to a more extensive partial privatisation, which has yet to take place. THAI joined with Lufthansa and United Airlines in 1997 to form the Star Alliance.
