Lockheed Martin plans to offer the Orion 21 as the basis of a Multi-Mission Aircraft (MMA) to replace US Navy P-3 s. As either refurbished P-3 Cs or new-build aircraft, the Orion 21 would be fitted with R-R AE2100 or Pratt & Whitney Canada PW1 SO turboprops. A two-crew cock pit would feature electronic displays, similar to US Custom Service AEW P-3s. Electrical, hydraulic and environmental control systems would be modernised. Anti-Submarine War fare Improvement Programme mission systems updates will be carried over. The USN has structural/avionics upgrades under way to keep its 228-aircraft P-3 fleet viable until replaced by the planned MMA. The Sustained Readiness Programme is extending service life, while the Avionics Improvement Programme is installing new anti-surface warfare sensors. A planned service life exten sion programme should keep the P-3s airworthy until the MMA enters service around 2015. Australia is upgrading the mission systems of 18 AP-3Cs under the Sea Sentinel programme. Raytheon delivered the first upgraded aircraft in September 1998. New Zealand is re-winging six P-3Ks to extend their life but cancelled a Raytheon update of the avionics and sensors. Norway and the Netherlands are upgrading the mission systems in their P-3 Cs. TheP-3 was first flown in 1958. Atotalof649 was built, including 345 P-3Cs. Kawasaki builds the P-3 under licence in Japan. •fcWMIWd.WMa.UMI.JiWJiftlrlil Aircraft Mission Powerplant Max thrust (lb) Wing span (m) Wing area (nf) Overall length (m) OEW (kg) MTOW (kg) MLW (kg) Max payload (kg) Max weapon load (kg) Range, max fuel (km) Endurance (h) Hard points Cruise (kt) Mmo Max landing dist, sea Max take-off dist, sea Max ceiling (ft) Crew Passengers Internal fuel (kg) Fuel, opt ext (litre) Air refuel? evel ISA (m) level ISA (m) A-4AR Fightinghawk Attack 1 X P&W J52-408A 11,215 8.39 24.15 12.29 5,032 11,540 4,153 3,220 550 5 560 832 38,700 1 2,000 3,400 Yes IA63 Pampa Advanced trainer/light attack 1 x Honeywell TFE731-2N 3,500 9.69 15.63 10.93 2,820 5,000 4,560 1,160 2,112 4h 20min 5 425 M0.74 460 430 42,300 2 l,383litre No S-3 VIKING SERVICE-LIFE extension and new sensors to improve the S-3's littoral warfare capabilities will keep the Viking carrierborne maritime- patrol aircraft operational until 2015, by which time the USN hopes to have a replacement Common Support Aircraft ready. A total of 187 S-3As was built and 121 were upgraded to S-3Bs, with improved mission systems. The USN is preparing life improve ment measures collectively known as Viking 21. A critical area is wing life and Lockheed Martin started full-scale fatigue test ing in May 1999. Changes to the avionics include new radios, including satcom, INS/GPS, 1553 databus, liquid crystal displays, digital air data computer and upgrad ed open architecture mission computer.
