ifrastructure and the CI IV11 US FLIGHT AHOSMCIIMKISTHY Awumsiooi Finalist Lufthansa CityLine Achievement First airline to receive European and international environmental certification Lufthansa CityLine is the regional airline oper ation of Germany's Lufthansa Group. Operating under the Lufthansa brand, the regional flies autonomously on routes in Europe and Germany that are not served by the mainline parent. CityLine employs a workforce of less than 2,000, has an all-jet fleet of 42 Bombardier CRJs and 18 BAE Systems Avro RJ85s and carried 5.7 million passengers last year. But in 2000, Lufthansa CityLine achieved what no other airline, including the world's major carriers, has done. The regional, small in airline terms, gained European Eco- Management and Audit Systems (EMAS) and inter national ISO 14001 environmental certification. European certification was received in January and ISO accreditation followed in August. To gain certification, the regional implemented a company-wide environmental management system and defined detailed environmental goals and mea sures for all of its activities, including technical services, flight operations and administration. Lufthansa CityLine works towards high environ mental standards in all operations. Its fleet, for exam ple, averages just 4.4 years old. The regional is aiming to maintain these environmental standards through its long-term fleet development with the reduction of fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. Some 10 envi ronmentally friendly 50-seat CRJ200s are joining the fleet, while 20 CRJ700s will be delivered in 2001-2, and Fairchild-Dornier 728JETs, arriving in 2003, will further reduce noise levels. In engineering operations, Lufthansa CityLine has created a central catalogue of hazardous substances and produced improved guidelines for their use and purchase in an effort to optimise the use of mainte nance supplies. Lufthansa CityLine's environmental certification represents a genuine achievement, according to the judges. "By going for environmental certification, the airline has shown a level of environmental responsibil ity and also set an example for other airlines. It is very important for the future of our industry that all airlines become more active in promoting environmental achievements," said a judge. FLIGHT Muutmi Finalist Swedavia and Alenia Marconi Systems Achievement Completion of the Faraway II project The Faraway II project continued the ground breaking work that Swedavia, Alenia Marconi Systems and their partners per formed in the first stage of the programme in 1997/8. Faraway I, exploring future air traffic man agement concepts, earned the project participants a finalist position in the Aerospace Industry Awards of 1998. Faraway II was launched in May 1998 and com pleted in October 2000, with the bulk of the flight trials conducted last year Project co-ordinator was Alenia Marconi Systems, with industry partners including Swedavia, Eurotelematik, Indra, ISR, CSC; air traffic service (ATS) providers ENAV and LFV; and airlines Alitalia and Air Vallee. The objective of the project was to implement data link ATS services through a pre-operational platform based on STDMAA/HF data link (VDL) Mode 4 sys tems and to perform a feasibility study for the in-service adoption of a Faraway automatic depen dent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) system. The flight trials involved Italian air traffic control centres at Rome and Padua; ground stations at Rome, Padua and Brindisi; and four aircraft-three Boeing MD-80s and one Beech King Air 200 - equipped with a global navigation satellite system and control, display and navigation units. Airborne applications tested included ADS-B posi tion reports, extended ADS, data link initialisation and transfer of control and controller-pilot data link com munications. The overall operational goal was to implement seamless data link operations across flight information region boundaries through a wide area ADS-B network and to evaluate operational benefits, including the quality of air-ground communication, the reduction in the congestion of voice channels and to avoid the shortcomings of voice. The Faraway II participants concluded that data link is a fundamental enabler for increasing system automation. The judging panel commended the pro ject participants for conducting a programme that is testing new technologies in an operational environ ment. The project is set to lead to wide industry benefits, they said. FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL
