repulsion Ifll 1 FLIGHT AOtOSMCI MDUSrUt AWAXDtZOOl Winner GE Aircraft Engines Achievement Continuing development and sales success of the GE90 Last year was an extremely significant one for General Electric's GE90 engine in terms of sales and development. In 2000, the GE90 won almost 75% of total engine orders for the Boeing 777, the GE90-115B was launched as the engine on Longer Range 777s and the GE90-94B was cer tificated and entered service on the 777-200ER. The GE90 story is one that has been 10 years in the making, with 2000 marking its final breakthrough. The GE90 was launched for the 777 in 1990. At that time, the engine was the first to have all-composite fan blades in airline service, a 23-to-1 high pressure compressor, low emissions and dual annular combustor. These technological developments allowed the GE90 to enter service in 1995 delivering low fuel burn, noise and emissions on the 777. The engine was not an immediate success story, however and for several years the GE90, which was the only new baseline engine for the 777, was third in a three-engine race behind Pratt & Whitney's and Rolls- Royce's engines. But GE maintained its strategy and when larger and heavier 777 models were introduced, the thrust-growth capacity of the GE90 became more suited to the aircraft in the long-term, culminating in Boeing selecting the GE90 as the exclusive engine on its Longer Range 777s in 1999. The GE90-115B derivative has been designed for 115,000lb (512kN) of thrust, which helped Boeing launch the Longer Range 777 with six customers last year The variant is due to enter service in 2003. The GE90-115Bteam includes revenue-sharing partners Snecma of France, Italy's FiatAvio and Ishikawajima- Harima Heavy Industries of Japan. Airlines are now increasingly choosing the GE90 at lower thrust settings, resulting in the GE90 family becoming the best-selling engine for all 777s. "This engine is a great achievement and cannot fail to be of the very first importance," said one judge, while another commented that 2000 was the GE90's "breakthrough year". FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL
