World Airliners Initial conversions were of the A310-200, but -300s are now being modified following a contract from US joint venture Magellan Aircraft Services/Triton Aviation Services for a mix of 10 A310-300s and A300-600s. A military multi-role tanker transport (MRTT) con version is offered for the A310, with Germany as launch customer. It has ordered four conversions from an EADS Airbus (Germany)/Lufthansa Technik (LHT) consortium. The German air force already operates four A310 multi-role transports (MRTs) converted by the A310 MRTT Air Force Consortium, set up by EADS and LHT. The four aircraft destined for Germany will be converted to the full MRTT specification in Hamburg between 2002 and 2004 through the installation of lower-deck fuel tanks and of wing-mounted, extendible refuelling pods. The work will also involve fitting an operator's station behind the cockpit. The first delivery of an MRTT to Germany will be in late 2003. Production See A300 Ordered: 260 Delivered: 255 A318/A319/A320/A321 Airbus entered the single-aisle, sub-200 seat mar ket with the launch of the 150-seat A320 in March 1984. The A320 family now comprises four models offering two-class seating capacity for 107 to 185 Russia's Transaero is one of several new operators of second hand Airbus A310s passengers. The A320 - the world's first subsonic airliner to have a fly-by-wire FCS and composite primary structures - had its first flight in February 1987 and entered service with Air France just over a year later. In 1989, Airbus launched a stretched derivative, the 185-seat A321-100, which entered service with Lufthansa in March 1994. An extended-range ver sion, the A321-200, which has increased weights and fuel capacity, was introduced in 1997. Deliveries began in 1999 of the corporate jet (CJ) version of the A319 which, with up to seven auxil iary fuel tanks, can carry 10 passengers over distances up to 11,600km. Airbus is looking at broadening the business jet range to include the A320andA321. Qatar Airways has acquired a 36-seat A319CJ for use on scheduled routes from Doha to destina tions in Europe and the Middle East during the peak summer season when the aircraft is not being used by the Qatar royal family for private charters. After first studying the development of an all-new 80- to100-seat family (AE31X) with China and Singapore, Airbus decided to create a 100-seater based on the A320. Designated the A318, this air craft received full launch approval in April 1999 and is 4.5 frames shorter than the A319 from which it is derived. It is offered with the P&W PW6000 and CFMICFM56-5B. To compensate for the shorter moment arm, the surface area of the vertical sta biliser has had to be increased by extending the fin tip by around 0.8m. Final assembly of the first A318 began at Airbus Deutschland's Hamburg plant in August, 2001, and the aircraft will make its first flight in January. Two PW6000-powered aircraft will undertake 750h of flight-testing before deliveries begin at the end of 2002 to launch customer International Lease Finance. Early airline customers include BA and Egyptair. The first CFM56-5B-powered aircraft will fly at the end of 2002. The second A318 will be re- engined with CFM56s to undertake 150h of tests with that engine. This version will enter service in 2003 with Air France. Three production A318s will be rolled out in 2002 and the rate will increase to four per month by mid-2003. CFMI is working on an extensive upgrade pack age for the CFM56-5A/5B engines that power the A320/A321. The upgrade includes a more durable high-pressure turbine (HPT) blade, coated with a more resistant platinum aluminide layer, which is expected to tackle oxidation issues on the current design, and is due to be available in the second quarter of 2002. 54 4-10 SEPTEMBER 2001 FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL www.fliqhtinternational.com
