FedEx has received the first six MD-10s, and a further nine will be handed over by year-end. The aircraft are being converted by Aeronavali in Italy, SR Technics in Palmdale, California, and ST Mobile Aerospace in Alabama. The last aircraft was completed and delivered in October 1994. SAIC was the prime Chinese contractor and three Chinese companies were involved to produce sub assemblies - Xian Aircraft, Chengdu Aircraft, and Shenyang Aircraft. The last aircraft produced, an MD-90-30T was delivered to China Northern Airlines in September last year. The Aerospatiale/Dasa 50:50 consortium Special Aircraft Transport International Company (SATIC) was selected for the project, with the work carried out at Toulouse. The type is based on new-build A300-600R airframes and has an upward-opening nose-section, a 7.4m-diameter fuselage and a lowered flightdeck structure. An enlarged fin and horizontal-tail end-plates improve directional stabil ity. The aircraft has 400m3 greater volume than that of the Super Guppy and 22.5t greater payload capacity. Dubbed A300-600ST Beluga, the aircraft was certificated in October 1995, after which the first of five aircraft was delivered to Airbus. Beluga capacity is being marketed to third parties by Airbus Transport International - which operates MCDONNELL DOUGLAS :aaBBHi Length (m) Wingspan (m) Height (m) Wing area (m2) Cabin width (m) Max take-off weight (kg) MTOW option Max landing weight (kg) Operating empty weight (kg) Max zero fuel weight (kg) Max payload (kg) > Powerplant Standard fuel capacity (I) Normal operating speed (kt) Normal operating speed (Mac Max cruise speed (kt/mach) Max cruising altitude (ft) Take-off field length (m, Sea I Landing field length (m, Sea I Accommodation (1-class) Accommodation (2-class) Design range /typical load / Option DC-8-63CF 57.1 45.2 13.1 DC-8-73AF 57.1 45.2 13.1 271.9 271.9 3.5 161,000 - 124,850 65,830 118,500 49,490 4 x 19,0001b P&W JT3D-7 91,890 352 h) 522 42,000 evel/ISA) - evel/ISA) - 189 209 7,400km >7.2t payload 3.5 161,000 - 124,850 67,740 118,500 50,760 4 x 22,020!b WBB HpHi HHMi DC9-30 36.3 28.5 8.38 112 3.14 49,895 54,940 45,814 25,400 41,730 16,330 DC-9-50 40.7 28.5 8.38 93 3.14 54,420 - 49,885 29,300 44,670 15,370 2 x 14,000-15,500lb 2 x 15,500/16,200lb CFMI CFM56-2CP&W JT8D-7,-9,-11 or-15 P&W JT8D-15/-17 91,890 352 0.88 522 42,000 3,048 1,981 - - 8,950km /27.2t payload . 13,925 350 - 503 35,000 1,777 1,317 119 105 2,220km 16,120 340 - 501 35,000 2,362 1,439 139 125 1,850km /12t payload /14t payload 2,940km/12t payload DC-10-10 55.5 47.34 17.7 329.8 5.71 190,504 - 164,854 111,344 151,956 40,612 3 x 40,000lb GE CF6-6D 82,134 400 0.82 475 42,000 2,625 1,720 380 255 5,370km /277 pax DC-10-30 DC-10/MD-10-30F 55.3 50.4 17.7 55.3 50.4 17.7 338.8 339 5.71 259,459 - 182,766 121,563 166,924 45,726 3 x 51,-52,5001b GE CF6-50C/C2 138,904 356 0.82 530 42,000 2,847 5.71 263,088 197,770 108,864 187,790 73,030 3x51,-52,500lb GE CF6-50C/C2 138,730 356 0.82 530 42,000 - 1,758 380 270 10,450km /277 pax - - 5,735km /78t payload www.fliqhtinternational.com FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL 4-10 SEPTEM BER 2001 71
