Testing of a third engine core is due next year following the completion of a second series of full-scale core tests at Evendale, Ohio, in April. During more than 160h of tests, the alliance says the engine exceeded projected operability characteristics. Tests have also been completed on a 42% scale swept wide chord fan set at P&W sister company's P&WC Longueuil site in Quebec. The tests validated performance of the three-dimensional aerodynamic design, though questions are thought to remain over the final configuration of the production unit. Detailed design is due to start in 2003 with first full engine-to-test expected in 2004, and joint European and US certification scheduled for mid-2005. First flight of the GP7200-powered A380 is still scheduled for early 2006, with entry-into-service due in September that year. GP7270/77 GP7270/77 70,000 Turbofan Airbus A380-800 With the GE merger apparently dead, Honeywell is quickly refocusing on its core propulsion areas of turboprops and turbofans for the general aviation, business and regional markets. At the head of this effort is the AS900 programme (see P54) which is due to be certificated on the BAE Systems RJX regional airliner (as the AS977) in late January, and on Bombardier's Continental super-midsize business jet (as the AS907) in the second quarter next year. Certification of both versions was delayed several months while Honeywell incorporated durability improvements to address issues uncovered during tests. The company is also in the early stages of developing the FX family, intended to replace the TFE731. Originally conceived in 1999 as the multi-purpose core for various duties as the future gas generator for turbo- shafts, turboprops, turbofans and auxiliary power units, the demonstrator core briefly became known as the AS905 before converting to the FX designation. Ranging in power from 3,000lb to above 6,000lb, the FX-3, -4 and -5 versions effectively replace the TFE731-20, -40 and -60, while closing the power gap with the AS907. The com pany is studying plans to fund a complete engine demonstrator in 2002 having just lost to P&W Canada's PW307A in the battle to power Dassault's FNX business aircraft. Existing business for both the TPE331 turboprop and TFE731 turbofan family meanwhile remains strong, the latter line seeing the 10,000th engine delivered (a -40 to Bombardier for the Lear 45) on 30 October. Retrofit business also remains steady - recent efforts include the Falcon 50 fitted with the TFE731-40 (building on the 731-5BR retrofit of the Falcon 20B), and the upgrading of Raytheon Hawker 700s from TFE731-3 to -4 standard.
