The 1,200shp engine, designed for twin helicopters in the 5-6t class, is scheduled for certification in 2005. Actively producing the Arriel, Arrius and Makila engines, Turbomeca also signed a memorandum of understanding with Kamov and NPO Saturn in mid-2001 covering the possible supply of Arrius-2G turboshafts for the Ka-115 and Ka-226 helicopters. Turbomeca is also radically revamping its repair processes and earlier this year placed a cost cap on Arriel overhauls to offset criticism over prices from Eurocopter AS350 Ecuriel operators. This fledgling transport is being studied by Boeing, llyushin and Sukhoi for entry-into-service in 2005-6, and could also be offered with ZMKB Progress D-436T or derated Aviadvigatel PS-90As. The SM146 is based on Snecma's internally tested DEM 21 project, and follows numerous failed predecessors - the best known being the aborted SPW14 development with P&WC. If a full-scale programme is launched by year-end, first flight could be in 2004 says Snecma. High-pressure compressor rig-tests have already begun and further component tests are due next year. Snecma also obtained French Government approval in mid-2001 for partial privatisation. The company's civil focus is on the emerging generation of personal jets, entry-level and light business aircraft, with competition only now starting to come from the Agilis TF1000, P&WC's newly launched PW600, and a conceptual turbofan under study by Teledyne Continental. Last year, Williams signed an exclusive agreement with Eclipse Aviation to provide its NASA-sponsored FJX-2 (renamed EJ-22) for the start-up company's six-place Eclipse 500. The FJ33, the first of which is set for certification next year, is being touted for several uncertain small jet projects including Century Aerospace's CA-100, Aerostar Aircraft's FJ-100, Chichester Miles Leopard Six and McCotter MC2400, a derivative of the Maverick twinjet kitplane. The larger FJ44 is produced for the Cessna CitationJet, Citation CJ1 and CJ2, Raytheon's Premier 1 and the Sino-Swearingen SJ30-2.
