Brazil will embark 23 ex- Kuwait air force A-4s and TA-4s on the carrier. To pro vide shipborne AEW, Embraer has teamed with Marsh Aviation to modify ex-US Navy S-2/E-1 Trackers/ Tracers (rather than Brazilian air force S-2s). Sea Skua-armed Super Lynx were ordered in 1991 and deliveries began in 1996. Earlier Lynx were upgraded to a similar standard. The Sea Kings are tasked pri marily with ASW but can also operate in the ASuW role. They deploy aboard the Minas Gera/s and on two assault ships. The Cougars are used as troop transports for the Brazilian marines. The air force's S-2 Trackers are under navy control when they deploy aboard the Minas Gerais. Requirements exist for a training helicopter and the army went some way to fulfilling a need for 20-30 medium transport machines, with an order for eight Cougars to be delivered in the first half of 2002. Army Aviation has had a 20-year development programme since the mid-1990s that aims to increase the force Type AS550 Fennec HB350-1 Esquilo (HA-1) AS565A Dauphin (HM-1) S-70A Black Hawk AS532UE Cougars No 19 16/20' 36 4 8' Role attack/recce attack/recce trans trans/peace trans EES2251 ANGKATAN TENTARA UDARA DIRAJA BRUNEI (ROYAL BRUNEI ARMED FORCES) Brunei continues to discuss purchasing BAE Hawks. The order was expected to be for six Hawk 200s and four Hawk 100s, although a more likely order now is for 12 Hawk 100s. The embryonic air force will use the PC-7 as a lead-in trainer for the Hawks. The Indonesian version of the CN235 has also been selected as a maritime patrol aircraft. The three air craft will be equipped with FLIR, ESM and a radar. The third CN235 is used as a crew trainer. Serviceability is a serious problem with large numbers of aircraft grounded, awaiting overhaul. Bulgaria's MiG-29s and Su-25s are to receive avionics improve ments which will make them compatible with NATO air forces, once funding is available. It discussed upgrad ing 20-plus MiG-29s with the Dasa/RSK MiG Aircraft Production Support joint venture and requested pric ing on 12 to 24 ex-USAF F-16s in 2001. Both options were deemed too expensive and instead it is to upgrade four to eight MiG-29s. The BWS has life- extended a number of aircraft including L-39s, some MiG-23s and Su-22s. A Yak-40 and a pair of An-24s were sold in 2001 with the L-29s due for withdrawal in the same year, with the remaining MiG-23s following in 2002. MiG-21s are expected to soldier on until 2012 without an upgrade. Bulgaria plans to acquire new aircraft after 2006. Six JetRangers and a single Bell 430 were delivered to Bulgaria in 1999-2001. However, while two aircraft were delivered in 1997, work on the other four was suspended, waiting for Cambodia to pay IAI. The MiG-21-2000 upgrade includes a service life extension, a HUD, an improved weapons system and new cockpit, GPS-based navi gation and Western communications equipment. The upgrade is understood also to include the Python 3 AAM and the Griffin LGB. It is thought the contract may cover conversion of nine single-seat and one twin-stick MiG-21. IAI also procured and modified six L-39 Albatros trainers for Cambodia: one was lost soon after delivery. Cambodia's difficulty in meeting the financial terms of its contract makes it unlikely that the remaining MiG-21s, which are thought to be unserviceable, will be upgraded.
