PANAMA SERVICIO AEREO NACIONAL (NATIONAL AIR SERVICE) Panama's national air service is the remnants of the air force that existed before the 1989 US invasion. It is now essentially a military transport service. Five of the UH-1Hs were acquired from Taiwan in 1997 although as with much of the fleet, serviceability is poor. During 2000, six ground T-35 Pillans were restored to airworthiness by the manufacturer. These would replace elderly AT-33s, which are grounded while the government decides whether they should be overhauled. Armed Xavantes and a few Tucanos are the combat element of the air force. The UH-1Hs also came from Taiwan. Six were handed over in March 2001 during a visit by the Taiwanese president. Asuncion's airport is also the base for Transporte Aereo Militar the country's military-run airline. Buying three more MiG-29SEs from RSK in 1998, in a deal that included support for the initial aircraft, solved this problem. MiG-29s and Su-25s have replaced Canberras and older Fitters. Peru was the first South American country to receive Soviet equipment when it bought Su-20s, An-26s, Mi-6s and Mi-8s in 1976. An-32s superseded An-26s in 1987. The Mi-24 Hinds were acquired from El Salvador in 1983 and Peru is considering replacing these with eight to 10 attack helicopters. It has considered the MH-1W multirole development of the AH-1W, the A129, Tiger and Rooivalk. In 1999, it took delivery of Zlin 242 light aircraft for training, whi for sale as a cost-saving measure. It operates the largest helicopter available, the Mi-26 Halo, but it is not clear if the type has replaced the older, and difficult to maintain, Mi-6 Hook. The bulk of air transport duties fall to the An-32s which were delivered in 1991. Five K-MAXs were ordered in 2001 by the US State Department for the police force. Peru would like 15 UH-1s from the same source.
