History Founded as a direct successor to American Airways, formed in 1930, with other predecessor companies dating to 1926. In April 1934, American Airways became American Airlines. American Airlines introduced the first ever Transcontinental jet service on 25 January, 1959. Launched the Oneworld alliance with British Airways in 1998. On 15 October 1998, American Airlines became the first airline to offer electronic ticketing throughout its entire worldwide network after the expan sion of its e-ticketing service to all 44 countries it serves. On 20 November, 1998, American Airlines acquired Reno Air in February 1999, and completed the integration of Reno Air's operation on 31 August, 1999. Acquired Trans World Airlines in 2001 and merged its fleet into American's in December 2001.
