Directory: world airlines following its entry into receivership during 2001. Suspended operations in March 2002. History Founded by Reginald Ansett and began operations with a service from Hamilton to Melbourne. Expanded gradually through the acquisition of several regional carriers, and became Australia's biggest privately owned airline on 4 October, 1957 with the purchase of struggling Australian National Airways (ANA), adopting the name of Ansett-ANA. ANA name was dropped in June 1969 in favour of Ansett Airlines of Australia. Taken over by Rupert Murdoch's News Ltd in 1980, with other shares acquired subsequently by TNT The airline was renamed Ansett Australia several weeks before domestic airline deregula tion started on 31 October, 1990. Its first international flights began on 11 September, 1993 to Bali. TNT's 50% holding was purchased by Air New Zealand in 1996 and in June 2000 it bought the remaining 50% from News Corp. Ansett Australia became a full member of the Star Alliance in March 1999. The airline went into receivership in 2001, but continued to operate a skeleton service. It was to be refinanced by Tesna. but this deal collapsed and the airline suspended operations on 4 March 2002.
