History Known as TABSO until 1968, the airline began services in 1947 as a joint Bulgarian-Soviet company, becoming a fully Bulgarian operation in 1954. In a major structural change, the company shed its non-airline functions and became an autonomous body within the Bulgarian Civil Aviation Corporation. In June 1999. the Bulgarian government sold 75% of Balkan to the Israeli Zeevi Group, and retained the remaining 25%. On 15 February, 2001 the airline was grounded by its majority share holder, and in March following it was declared bankrupt. In May 2001 the carrier restarted services between Sofia and London, and has since been building services.
