History Incorporated, as its name reflects, in the Great Lakes region, it started scheduled services on 12 October, 1981, with flights between Spencer and Des Moines. In February 1988, Great Lakes acquired Alliance Airlines, adding six cities sur rounding Lake Michigan to its route network. Over the next few years the airline continued to expand, culminating in a codeshare agreement with United Airlines that was signed in February 1992. On 19 January, 1994, Great Lakes went public, trading on the NASDAQ stock exchange.
