History Founded by Andres Soriano as Philippine Air Lines (PAL) and started with a Beech 18, carrying five passengers from Manila to Baguio. The outbreak of the Pacific War cut short PALs progress, but flying resumed on 14 February, 1946 on local routes. International expansion began on 31 July, 1946 with a service to Oakland, California. By 1948, PAL had absorbed the only other Philippine scheduled air lines, Far Eastern Air Transport and Commercial Air Lines. On 10 March, 1973, PAL was designated as the national flag carrier. Partial privatisation took place in 1992, when a 67% controlling share was sold to PR Holdings, a consor tium of local banking investors, leaving the government with the remainder. Financial pressures and union disputes forced Philippine Airlines to cease operations on 23 September, 1998, although limited domestic operations restarted on 7 October and international services three weeks later.
