Its European flights were quickly taken up by subsidiary Crossair, which is now also assuming its inter continental operations under the new brand of Swiss. Swissair had been established on 16 March, 1931 from the merger of two pioneering airlines. Ad Astra Aero and Balair. After being forced to suspend services during the Second World War. it resumed flying on 30 July, 1945. being desig nated the national carrier in 1947.
