Its extensive operations, which included a nationwide domestic schedule and international services in the Americas and to Europe, are being integrated into American Airlines, a process which is close to being completed. The airline was formally merged into American in December 2001. The famous initials TWA date to 1930-when Western Air Express merged with Transcontinental Air Transport to form Transcontinental and Western Air (TWA). TWA was the first airline to fly a coast-to-coast US service and the first to Offer this service non-stop. The first commercial interconti nental flight was inaugurated from New York to Paris on 5 February, 1946. The title Trans World Airlines was officially adopted in 1950.
