Financial troubles forced the airline to cease operations on 4 December, 2001, and attempts to restart were dealt a severe blow when the Brazilian CAA suspended its air operator's certificate on 5 February 2002. Transbrasil had been founded on 5 January, 1955 as Sadia by Cdr Omar Fontana , initially transporting cargo for the Sadia Group, an agribusiness conglomerate owned by the Fontana family. Scheduled services were added soon after and in 1962 the acquisition of Transportes Aereos Salvador enabled it to extend its activities to north east Brazil.
