History As a result of the collapse of the Kabul communist regime in 1992, internal factional fighting destroyed a large pro portion of the Ariana infrastructure and aircraft. In October 1996. Pakistan provided a temporary maintenance and operational base at Karachi Airport. Domestic routes were also relaunched at the time from Kabul Airport. In 1999 UN sanctions forced the airline to suspend overseas operations, and in November 2001 the airline was grounded completely. However, in December 2001 the airline started rebuilding its operations, flying limited domestic services. In January 2002 sanctions were lifted and the airline operated its first international flight in more than two years, from Kabul to Delhi. The carrier lost most of its aircraft in the air strikes which followed the US terrorist attacks in September 2001. and is reported to have just two remaining - one an Antonov An-24 and the other a Boeing 727-200.
