It entered ser vice in 1977. Field Aviation of Canada offers a gross-weight increase and cargo door and increased fuel-capacity retrofits. Delivered: 113 In service: 86 Dash 8/Q Series The Dash 8/Q Series consists of four models of twin turboprops seating 37-78 passengers. Since 1998, Bombardier has renamed the Dash 8 line the Q Series, to signify availability of an active noise and vibration reduction system. The 36-seat P&WC PW120-powered Dash 8-100 made its first flight in 1983 and entered service in 1984. The -200. a higher-powered version, was introduced in 1992. The -300 variant incorporated a stretched fuselage to seat 50-60 passengers, with fuselage plugs for ward and aft of the wing adding 3.35m. It first flew in 1987 and deliveries began in 1989. The -300 also has a bigger wing, strengthened undercarriage and uprated P&WC PW123 engines. The 78-seat stretched high-speed Dash 8 Q400 made its maiden flight in 1998, and entered service with launch customer SAS Commuter in February 2000. It is powered by P&WC PW150A turboprops driving six-bladed composite propellers. Service introduction was marred in October 2000 when SAS Commuter had to temporarily ground its Q400 fleet after a series of emergency landings. Fixes were developed for all of the problems. Approval to allow Q400 operations at London City Airport, which has a steep 5.5° approach glideslope angle, was granted by Transport Canada and the JAA in October 2001. Augsburg Airways ini tiated services from the airport, with capacity limited to 65 passengers. Bombardier says the Q400 can operate from City with 100% capacity, but only on routes limited to 740km. Bombardier is looking to develop civil-freighter and special-missions derivatives of the Q400 in an effort to boost sales. The dedicated freighter version of the Q400. equipped with a large side cargo door, would be capable of carrying a payload of up to 8,630kg. The future of the line is in doubt, however, with a resumption of production after an impending line closure still uncertain. The Dash 8's future is thought to be contingent on Bombardier converting more options into orders during the shutdown. Meanwhile Air Nippon Network ordered four Q400s in October for delivery from the third quarter next year, and Regional Airline Holdings of Toronto, Canada hopes to launch a new airline from Toronto next year and plans to purchase 15 Q400s. Production Final assembly is undertaken at the de Havilland plant in Downsview, Ontario. 55 Dash 8s were deliv ered in 2001. Bombardier announced in October that it is to suspend Dash 8 production for six to eight weeks from November, by which time it plans to have delivered all 36 aircraft due in 2002. Production should resume in 2003. but details have not yet been finalised. Ordered: 676 (299 Q100/94 Q200/209 Q300/74 Q400) Delivered: 650 (298 Q100/94 Q200/194 Q300/64 Q400) Shorts Brothers was acquired by Bombardier and its Belfast facilities now produce fuselage sections for the CRJ family. Shorts 330 The twin-engined 30-seat Shorts 330 was first flown in 1974. The P&WC PT6A-45 aircraft was also offered as a freight version - the 330-UTT (Utility Tactical Transport) - with increased payload and maximum take-off weight. Delivered: 136 In service: 64 360 The 360 succeeded the 330 in 1982 and was pro duced until 1991, the last variant being the 360-300. The -300 is powered by two P&WC PT6A-67R tur boprops. Shorts has converted ex-airline 360s for the US Army to a utility role, incorporating a rear loading ramp and the twin-fin empennage of the 330. Two engine types are available on the pro duction piston-engined model, 195kW Textron Lycoming O-540s or 225kW IO-540s. Fly BN sup ports 855 in-service aircraft. In July, Romanian manufacturer Romaero relaunched series production of the BN-2B under a contract from B-N for 24 aircraft. The first of these aircraft was transferred to B-N for completion in September. BN-2T Turbine Islander The upgraded BN-2T, with Allison 250-B17 turbo props, tip tanks and increased cruise speed and range, first flew in 1980. The BN2T-4S Defender 4000, the latest surveillance and patrol version, was first delivered in 1997 to the Irish Police. It features an EFIS-equipped flightdeck, a new nose, stretched fuselage and larger wing. In January, Greater Manchester Police in the UK took delivery of a Defender 4000 for policing duties, following Hampshire Police's selection of the aircraft in 2000.
