No numbers have been specified, but it is unlikely that Uruguay can afford more than five or eight aircraft. Likely types include the F-5E and A-4. Today's limited combat capa bility is provided by ex-USAF A-37B Dragonflys, a hand ful of Argentine-built Pucaras and armed PC-7s. SF260EUS delivered in 1999-2000 have replaced T-34s. The air force received another pair of Wessex HC2s from the UK by the end of 2002. The primary task of the air force is transport operations with a diverse collection of aircraft. Like many other Latin American air forces, the FAU runs a domestic airline, Transpose Aereo Militar Uruguayo, which operates additional C212s. Around 60% of the fleet is service able. The Uzbek air force has close links with the Russian air force because of a bilateral agreement between the republic and the CIS High Command. It plans to order five ll-76s upgraded with CFM56 engines, as much to help local industry as to bolster the air force, and it has signed a deal with Sagem to upgrade 12 Mi-24s; 12 Mi-17s could be fitted with the same glass cockpit and new sensors. It has also considered 24 K-8s in a deal that would also include 10 Y-12 transports. Caracas is increasing its defence ties with China. Around 40 air craft would be needed for advanced training and light- strike roles. The MB339 deal would have included AMX-T/ATAs for the latter role. Despite its lack of direc tion, the air force did order eight AMX-Ts in September 1999. Subsequently, Venezuela has asked Embraer and IAI to fit the AMX with the Elta EL/M-2032 radar. The aircraft will be delivered to the Brazilian AMX upgrade standard. The Elta radar, FIAR's Grifo and an upgrade of the existing APG-66 are being considered as part of an F-16 upgrade approved in early 2002. A contractor has still to be selected. Singapore Technologies Aerospace upgraded nine CF-5s, which have been redesignated VF-5s, for the Venezuelan air force in 1991-93. Six more could receive the same package. The improvement included a new mission computer, INS navigation, a radar altimeter and a digital communications bus. F-16s were delivered in the early 1980s when the USA was more concerned about Cuba than an arms build-up in Latin America. Venezuela is considering an upgrade for its C-130s. Israel's Mata upgraded the three Bell 214s in 2001. The three aircraft were deliv ered in mid-1998. Four Heli-Dyne modified Bell 412s are the most recent deliveries and the navy requires eight ASW-capable machines.
