Safety review Aircraft type/registration Loca Total occupants Phase 26 April Hewa Bora Airways Boeing 707-320C (9Q-CKB) Ndjili Airport, Kinshasa, Congo - 4 L The aircraft, landing from a flight from Johannesburg, veered off the runway and its gear was badly damaged. There was local thunderstorm activity with reduced visibility and strong winds. 30 April Aerovista Antonov An-12 (ST-AQP) Heglig Airport, Sudan - 4 RA Hit a flock of birds on approach and one engine lost power. The aircraft's rate of descent increased and it hit the ground short of the runway hitting an earth bank and losing some of its gear. The remainder of the gear had collapsed by the time the aircraft came to a halt. 11 June Sudan Airways Fokker F27-600 (ST-SSD) Khartoum Airport, Sudan - 2 L During "touch-and-go" exercises the pilot was unable to raise the flaps from 40° to the take-off setting, so he decided to abandon the take-off. The tyres failed and the air craft drifted to the right, ran off the runway and hit the ILS glideslope installation. 14 June Hellas Wings BAe Jetstream 31 (SX-BN) Nr Athens, Greece H| 3 AA During the descent the passenger door opened and broke off. 15 June Bimini Island Air Fairchild Metro II (N677SP) Fort Lauderdale Apt, Florida, USA - 2 L Suffered electrical problems soon after take-off and the crew elected to return. The nose-gear would not lower, so eventually the aircraft landed with the nosewheel up. 15 June Schreiner Airways DHC Dash 8-300 (PH-SDU) Maastricht Airport, Netherlands - 2 L During a post-maintenance test flight the right main undercarriage would not lock down. The crew decided to land with it indicating unsafe and it collapsed during landing roll. 26 June All Nippon Airways Boeing 767-200 (JA-8254) Shimoju Island, Japan - 3 L During "touch-and-go" exercises, the aircraft touched down hard with a firm tailstrike and the right wingtip and horizontal stabiliser hit the ground. The aircraft rolled the other way, its left wingtip hit the ground, and it left the runway. The gear survived. 13 July Sakhaavia Antonov An-24RV (RA-46670) Yakutsk Airport, Russia - 4 L The flight engineer failed to put the gear down for an approach, and although it was noticed at the last moment the go-around was initiated too late and the aircraft belly-landed. The undercarriage warning horn had been disabled. 26 July Africa One Antonov An-26 (9Q-CMC) N'Djili Airport, Kinshasa, Congo - 17 TO The undercarriage failed during an aborted take-off. 26 July FedEx Boeing 727-200F (N497FE) Tallahassee Airport, Florida, USA 2 3 Landed short of runway 09 by about 1km following a visual approach in darkness, hit trees and was destroyed by fire. The weather and visibility were good. 7 August Wuhan Air Lines Xian Y-7-100 (B-3472) Sanxia Airport, Yichang, China - 5 The aircraft landed with its undercarriage retracted at Yichang, having declared technical problems. 28 August Buffalo Airways Douglas DC-4 (C-GQIC) Diavik Airport, NWT, Canada HI 2 L Undershot runway 10 by about 1m, ground-looped and the right wing broke away. 23 October Tretyakovo Air llyushin II-86M (RA-86452) Manas Apt, Bishkek, Kyrghistan 3 9 L The aircraft landed long and overran the 4,200m runway by about 900m, hit the perimeter fence and was destroyed by fire. Conditions were CAVOK with wind calm. 29 October Everts Air Curtiss C-46D (N54514) Fairbanks, Alaska, USA - 2 G Right main gear collapsed during taxi after landing. 6 November Silk Way Airlines Antonov An-12 (4K-AZ21) Kome Airport, Togoland - 6 L The aircraft landed about 800m long on the 1,800m runway and failed to stop before the end. The undercarriage was torn off in the soft ground. 9 November UTAir Antonov An-26 (RA26012) Antalya, Turkey - 5/22 RA Hit power lines 500m from airport boundary. Flew through a severe thunderstorm on approach and windshear caused loss of height during an attempt to go around 13 December Arrow Air Douglas DC-8-62F (N1804) Changi Intl Airport, Singapore - 4 L Overran runway 02R on landing in poor visibility and heavy rain. Nose gear torn off. 24 December Benair Metro (OY-ABM) Aberdeen, Scotland HIH TO Hit a car on a road just outside the airfield boundary.
