Directory: military engines Model (Inc submodel) Max thrust reheat (lb) Max thrust dry (lb) Max power (SL) (kW) Notes/description ROLLS-ROYCE TURBOMECA The RTM322 developed by Rolls-Royce and Turbomeca is offered on the AgustaWestland EH101, NH Industries NH90 and the Boeing-derived Westland Apache. Total requirement is estimated at 1,300 engines. Over 80 engines have been installed, and 1,100 RTM322s have so far been ordered. The engine was selected for the UK armed forces EH101s. In 2001, the engine was selected by Finland, Norway, Poland and Sweden for their NH90 orders and by Denmark and Portugal to power EH101 s. Germany, France and the Netherlands have firm orders for 127 RTM322-powered NH90s. An announcement on the engine choice for the Japan Defence Agency's (JDA) impending 14-strong EH101 order is overdue, with Kawasaki Heavy Industries to produce the RTM322 locally, if suc- RTM322 RTM322 1,670 cessful. Significant follow-on orders follow the announcement as Japan needs to acquire new SAR and CSAR helicopters. Kaasaki Heavy Industries would licence-assemble the RTM322s if selected. R-R Turbomeca is pitching the engine to the US Army Special Operations Command for a planned Sikorsky MH- 60K/L Black Hawk upgrade. R-R says it has benchtested the RTM322 to over 2,250kW, but that the engine falls short on fuel consumption and payload/range performance. R-R and Sikorsky are also discussing offering the RTM322 on the S-92 for US military requirements, including replacement of USAF HH-60G Pave Hawks. Sales opportunities may arise from the development of the US- manufactured US101 version of the EH101. Flight tests are to begin as early as July. Samara Kuznetsov hopes the test effort could be completed by the end of 2003. Preparations for series production NK-93 NK-93 39,700 of the NK-93 are in hand with partners Kazan and Samara enterprises company Motorostroitel. With a take-off thrust rating of up to 39,5001b, the engine weighs 3,650kg and is targeted with an overhaul interval of 7,500h and a service life of around 15,000h. Specific fuel consumption is expected to be close to 0.49kg/kg/h. Propfan. Tu-330 Snecma M88 export sales prospects suffered two setbacks over the last year. The company's hopes of getting the M88 into the Royal Australian Air Force were dashed last year when the JSF was sole-sourced in place of the Air 6000 competi tion in which the Dassault Rafale was expected to compete. Earlier this year, the French government said it would not foot the bill for Rafale upgrades and modifica tions requested by potential customers. The Rafale, equipped with 20% more powerful M88-3s, was offered in the South Korean fighter contest, but the upgrade was abandoned when the Rafale lost to the Boeing F-15K. Better prospects may lie in Singapore's requirement for 20 aircraft, plus 20 options, where the Rafale is pitched against the F-15T and F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, Eurofighter Typhoon, Lockheed Martin F-16C/D Block 60 and Sukhoi Su-35. Singapore's recent deci sion to join the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter programme as a security co-operation participant puts its willingness to commit to a new type in the near term in doubt, however. France's Rafale procurement is progressing steadily, with bud gets set out for 59 orders this year as part of a procurement of 294 air force and navy Rafales. The M53 powerplant on Dassault Mirage 2000s may benefit from Brazil's F-X BR fighter replacement programme. Before the Mirage 2000 lost in Poland's air force competition last year, Snecma planned to hand final assembly of M53-P2 engines to Poland's WZL-4, and was keen to re-engine the PZL-Mielec I-22 Iskra 2 with Larzac 02 engines for Western export. A proposed upgraded higher-thrust M53-PX3 is under discussion with operators and industrial partners, particularly in India. Cancellation of the Czech Republic's Gripen order has thrown open to the Mirage 2000 again the country's requirement for 10-12 new or used aircraft. In March, Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) completed the first flight of the HJT-36 Intermediate Jet Trainer powered by a Larzac 04H20. Snecma is proposing the development of a 3,800lb- thrust version for improved HJT-36 performance. Larzac Larzac 04-R20 MS3 M53P2 M88 M88 2 21,300 16,900 3,200 14,450 11,200 Turbofan. Dassault Rafale KMWl Components for several RD-1700s have been made for potential RSK MiG-AT jet trainer customers requiring all-Russian equipment, although the main mar keting emphasis appears to have swung in favour of the Snecma/Turbomeca Larzac 04R20-powered option. RSK say the RD-1700 will be available to power future versions of the MiG-AT, as well as the Hindustan Aeronautics HJT-36 Intermediate Jet Trainer. Development costs for the RD-1700, which was paired with one Larzac to power a prototype MiG-AT for tests last year, is estimated at $85 million, and was provided partly by Moscow's Chernyshev Machine Building Enterprise. The company is also demonstrating its 1,000lb-thrust R- 125 for possible use on UAVs. R13 R13-300 R79 R79-300 R-195 R-195-300 R29B R29B-300 14,831 - - 27,483 9,200 34,561 9,933 17,629 Turbojet.
