Delivered: 5 In service: 5 Tupolev Joint Stock Company, 17 Akademika Tupoleva, Moscow 111250, Russia Tel: +7 (095) 261 2436 Fax: +7 (095) 261 0868 A "single national civil aviation corporation" has been proposed which would see the merging of Tupolev with fellow design bureau llyushin along with production plants Aviastar (Ulyanovsk), KAPO (Kazan) and VASO under a consortium of Russian industrial investors National Reserve Bank (NRB). Up to 25% would be offered to foreign investors. TU-154M The initial version of the Tu-154 flew in October 1968. Early versions (Tu-154, -154A and -154B-2) are equipped with Kuznetsov NK-8 engines. The Aviadvigatel D-30KU-powered version, the Tu-154M, which was the last production variant, fea tures increased weights and range. Deliveries to Aeroflot began in late 1984, and about 400 have been completed. A cargo conversion, the Tu-154S, with a large freight-door on the forward fuselage is also in service. NPO Saturn, which produces the Tu-154M's D-30KU engine, is offering a Chapter 3 hushkit for around $100,000 per aircraft. NPO Saturn has tested a new combustion chamber which will enable the present Chapter 3 hushkit to comply with the planned "Chapter 3 minus 5dB" rules that some European air ports are planning. The kit, which to costs around $15,000 per engine, is due for certification this year. A new low-emission combustion chamber is offered to meet the stricter emission standards that are due to come into force in 2004. Saturn is also undertaking a $3.5 million programme to bring the D-30KU in line with proposed Chapter 4 standards, which should be completed by 2005. The last Tu-154M deliveries took place last year, with one aircraft going to GTK Rossiya and one to Urals Airlines. Aviacor says it has six unfinished Tu-154M airframes laid down 10 years ago, and Urals Airlines is discussing the acquisition of some of these white-tails. Sibir says it continues consider ing the acquisition of new Tu-154Ms. Production Assembly of the Tu-154 was undertaken by Aviacor, in Samara, but the production line has closed. Six aircraft await completion and sale. Delivered: 928 (605 A/Bs and 323 Ms) Tu-204-100/120 Representing Russia's first new technology single- aisle airliner, versions of the Tu-204 twinjet have been delivered with Russian and Western engines. The first flew in January 1989 and received Russian certification in January 1995. Aeroflot received its first Tu-204, a -204C freighter, in April 1995. The baseline Tu-204-100 version is powered by Aviadvigatel PS-90 engines and is produced by the Aviastar plant in Ulyanovosk. An enhanced version of the PS-90, the A2, is under development by Aviadvigatel and manufacturer PMZ (Perm Motor Plant). The engine will cost 20% more thanjhe ear lier engine, but the design bureau predicts a 40% reduction in life-cycle costs via the introduction of improved components, including some non- Russian items, which will extend the time between overhauls. Improvements will be retrofitable to the earlier model (see 11-76 entry). The Tu-204-120 is the Westernised version of this model, is powered by R-R RB211-535E4Bs. The first example flew in August 1992. Leasing com pany Sirocco Aerospace was formed by Egyptian company Kato Aromatic to market the R-R-powered aircraft and placed orders and options in 1996 for up to 30. This model received Russian certification in July 1997 and Egyptian carrier Air Cairo took deliv ery of the first example in November 1998. With five aircraft in service operated by Air Cairo and TNT Sirocco confirmed the order for the remain ing 25 Tu-204-120s in November last year, reviving production of the twinjet at Aviastar's Ulyanovsk fac tory. Aviastar began building the Tu-204-120s this year funded by $150 million from Sirocco. Sirocco has a contract with China Northwest and China Southwest for five Tu-204-120C freighters, which will come from the newly ordered batch. Deliveries should start in the first quarter of 2004. Tupolev is undertaking JAA certification of the RB211-powered version to enable Sirocco to place the aircraft with European airlines, but the approval schedule, originally due in 2003, has slipped. A short flight-test/validation programme is required using the first aircraft equipped with an English-lan guage cockpit. This features altimeters calibrated in feet rather than metres, and instrument inscriptions in English instead of Russian.
