Production of the 33-seat twin turboprop ended in 1999, after the 340A had been super seded by the improved hot-and-high performance 340B in 1989, and the higher-weight 340B Plus, featuring a redesigned cabin, in 1994. From 1996 optional extended wingtips were available for the 340B Plus. Saab Aircraft Leasing offers a bulk freighter ver sion of the 340A. Retaining the aircraft's 1.32 x 1.35m aft door, cargo capacity is 4,000kg. The modification is also applicable to the 340B. Two P&WC PT6D-114A turboprops drive the single propeller through a Soloy Dual Pac gearbox. The fuselage is stretched by 2m and maximum take-off weight is increased by 40% to 5,675kg. It is offered in a nine-seat plus freight combi configuration, but in an all-passenger configuration could seat 15-17. Aeroflot became the potential launch customer in 2001, signing a memorandum of understanding for at least 30 aircraft, while domestic carrier Sibir says it favours the type to fulfill its 50 aircraft requirement for new regional jets. In September Finance-Leasing (FLK) agreed to pay a deposit to cement its commit ment to 30 RRJs for lease to Russian airlines. Sukhoi estimates a market for 600 units by 2020, 10% of the global regional jet demand. CIS airlines are expected to require 150 aircraft and a potential market for 100 exists in India. Sales volume is expected to total $11 billion. In June, Sukhoi opened technical discussions with Air France and the SkyTeam alliance to ensure the aircraft meets Western demands. Sukhoi plans to complete prototypes in 2005, with a first flight scheduled for early 2006 leading to deliveries in 2007. Production Siberian plant Novosibirsk Aircraft Production Organisation (NAPO), a sister company of Sukhoi, has been chosen as the RRJ final assembly site. Russia's Komsomolsk-na-Amure Aircraft Production Organisation (KnAAPO) will produce the wing as a risk-sharing partner, transporting com pleted examples 4,000km to NAPO. Empennage construction may be performed by Hindustan Aerospace of India under a risk-sharing agreement. First metal will be cut in 2004. Series production will start in 2006. The 50-seater first flew in 1992 and entered service with Swiss regional airline Crossair in 1995. Production ended in 1999. Switzerland's Lugano airport, a major centre of operations for Saab 2000s, is increasing its approach glideslope to 6°, from 5.5°. Saab 2000 compliance would require recertification, but Saab is keen to avoid such costs. The Saab 2000 is certificated for 5.5° steep approaches and the company is proposing alterna tive routing to Lugano authorities as an alternative. The result lies in the hands of Lugano and its operators. It features a pressurised forward passenger cabin and 136.6m3 of aft cargo space. The first upgraded Y-8F600 civil freighter is to make its first flight this year and enter service in early 2006. Powered by the P&WC PW150B turboprop, the new Y-8 variant will have 4m-diameter, six-bladed, all-composite propellers from Dowty. More than 120 aircraft are expected to be delivered over 20 years after certification. The prototype Su-80 (renamed from the S-80 this year) high-wing turboprop first flew in September 2002. Powered by two GE CT7-9Bs the aircraft fea tures a twin-tail boom design and a large rear loading ramp. The 30-seat aircraft's rugged design enables operation in harsh environments. The project received a blow earlier this year when the Russian air force selected the competing llyushin 11-112VT as its future lightweight tactical transport. India approached Russia recently about setting up a joint production programme for the Su-80, with a final assembly line in India. The Su-80 development prototype has so far made 39 flights, with certification having been repeatedly postponed due to the lack of customers. Sukhoi says the Indian interest has prompted it to "speed up the flight-test programme". The flight-test programme will involve three Su-80s, the later two production-representative examples being 1.4m longer than the prototype. Sukhoi plans to submit the Su-80 for Russian AP-25 certification early next year, although the target cer tification date has slipped from 2004 to the first quarter of 2005. The third aircraft will be configured as a commer cial Su-80GP with a quick-change passenger/cargo cabin seating 30 passengers and increased fuel capacity giving a range of 1,800km. It will be equipped with a Sukhoi/Elektroavtomatika cockpit featuring five 150 x 200mm liquid-crystal displays. The three flight-test aircraft will then enter service with manufacturer KnAAPO's own airline This year Sukhoi signed a leasing agreement with Finance-Leasing aimed at Siberian and Russian far east carriers, based on a $6 million price for the Su-80GR Sukhoi aims to capture up to 40% of Russia's 350-500 regional airliner market forecast to 2015 with the Su-80. Military versions are also proposed, for which a market of 800 units is estimated.
