In September 1998, the Danish air force became the first overseas customer for the NFTC pro gramme. It intends to keep the Lynx in service until 2015. The aircraft were modified in 1990-4 by fitting an improved tactical data system, ESM, FLIR and uprated Gem 42 engines, and are now being upgraded to a near Super Lynx stan dard; the first was redelivered in November 2000. This includes a 360° radar, nose-mounted FLIR turret, and reverse-direction tailrotor and composite main rotor blades. The Lynxs are deployed at sea aboard five frigates. In 2003, the navy's helicopter units will become subordinate to the air force. HAERENS FLYVETJENESTE (ARMY FLYING SERVICE) Army aviation will use EH101s ordered as part of Denmark's deal linked to the four-nation Nordic Standard Helicopter Programme for troop transport. The army operates 12 MD500Ms and 12 AS550 Fennecs. The latter are armed with the TOW ATM, guided using the Swedish HeliTow sight, with two mis siles on each side of the fuselage and extra rounds in the cabin. The MD500s are used as scouts. In 2003, the army's helicopter units will become subordinate to the air force. FORCE AERIENNE DJIBOUTIENNE (AIR FORCE) The An-28 Cash was supplied by Poland as, possibly, were the Mi-2 and Mi-8. Photographic evidence reveals that at least one Mi-2 has been fitted with rocket pods, the only armed aircraft within the air force. This limited combat capability is backed up by the French air force, which has maintained a significant presence since independence in 1977. To replace elderly C-47s, it acquired three C212-400s, delivered in April and May 2000 and February 2001. In August 2001, the air force ordered 10 Super Tucanos and five Ipanema crop dusters. The Super Tucanos will replace non-airworthy A-37s. A pro posed order for 10 Ecureuils has not received parlia mentary approval. The Dominican Republic has acquired eight ex-Chilean air force T-35B Pillans and has requested information on a maritime patrol version of the turboprop Pillan. The US government has autho rised the sale of 11 UH-1HS and three SH-3D Sea Kings, earmarked respectively for the Dominican army and navy. The latter will perform SAR duties, while the former are destined for transport tasks. The air force intends to upgrade its UH-1Hs to Huey II standard, although funds have not been made available. Israeli-built Kfirs have been delivered in two batches, the second in 1996. IAI has developed the Kfir CE upgrade for Ecuador incorporating the Elta 2034 radar, the SPS-45 RWR, new navigation system, new ECM and a cockpit overhaul, including HOTAS controls, two colour MFDs and the Python 4 SRAAM. The Jaguars have also received upgrades, similar to the UK's Jaguar 96 programme. Talks to buy MiG-29s and used A-4M Skyhawks have come to nothing. The air force has requested US funding for 10 UH-1 Huey II upgrades, and in 2002 the US ambassador to Quito said five helicopters would be handed over for anti-drugs missions in 2003. US-built combat aircraft form the backbone of the Egyptian air force, once reliant on the Soviet Union. In 1999, Egypt ordered 24 more F-16C/D Block 40s, split 50:50 between single- and twin-seater aircraft. Deliveries began in June 2001. The aircraft are fitted with advanced IFF and AGM-84 Harpoon ASM capabili ty, both of which will be retrofitted to the rest of the F-16C/D fleet. Egypt is moving towards making the F-16 its only frontline type and is considering the Block 60 as an F-4 replacement. It is also looking to acquire a reconnaissance pod capability from the US for its F-16s. Egypt's air defence fighters are supported by five E-2C AEW aircraft, with a sixth example on order. The E-2Cs are being upgraded to Hawkeye 2000 standard with the APS-145 radar and the first aircraft was delivered in March 2003. Egypt signed a deal to upgrade its Apaches to AH-64D Longbow standard in 2000. Redeliveries will start in December 2003. The USA has yet to approve the sale of the Longbow radar to Egypt. Twelve CH-47s are being upgraded to D standard, with the remaining seven likely to be modified too. Egypt selected the China/Pakistan K-8 Karakorum basic trainer in late 1999 to replace L-29s. The first of 80 aircraft, powered by the Honeywell TFE731, rather than the Progress AI25, flew in mid-2000. Ten aircraft will be built in China, the rest in Egypt. Egypt also has an advanced trainer requirement to replace L-59s and Alpha Jets, for which the Hawk and L-159 are being considered. The country has also held talks about an avionics upgrade for its 30 F-4Es and is seeking a similar modification for its C-130s, although Egypt has also expressed an interest in four to six C-130Js. Egypt is also seeking an FMS deal for two Gulfstream IV-SPs and a similar number of UH-60Ls for VIP duties.
