BUSINESS & CORPORATE AVIATION FINALIST ROCKWELL COLLINS ACHIEVEMENT: Collins Airs how 21 system The Collins Airshow 21 family includes a number of products designed to provide the level of flexibility and features required for each installation. Rockwell Collins' long-standing pres ence in flight deck systems and integra tion has now moved aft to business jet cabins. Launched in September 2002, Collins Airshow 21 systems are being installed on the Bombardier Global 5000 and the Gulfstream G500 and G550 aircraft. Rockwell Collins claims the system offers operators significantly improved reliability and maintainability while accommodating future growth. The system's plug-and-play capability allows for installation flexibility practi cally anywhere in the cabin, says the company. It also allows passengers to conduct business or relax with several entertainment options, all while managing the amenities of the cabin environment. For passengers interested in staying productive, Airshow 21 enables the Global Office with air-to-ground data connectivity for secure, high-speed access to e-mail, the internet and, in the future, videoconferencing. The system also provides interfaces for file sharing and office equipment such as printers, fax machines and scanners. The entertainment features, mean while, allow passengers to select and control numerous sources, including multiple VCRs, DVD players, multi-disc CD changers, and live TV as well as audio/video on demand. It also provides access to real-time news, information, weather and entertainment content from a variety of sources. Management of the cabin's environ mental systems such as the galley, lava tory, lighting and temperature by passengers and crew from multiple loca tions throughout the aircraft is another key feature of the system. The Collins Airshow 21 family includes a number of products designed to provide the level of flexibility and features required for each installation. These include: • Tailwind 500 satellite TV. • Satellite communications -Aero-I and Aero-H/H+. • High-speed data. • Moving maps. • On-demand information including a choice of content for news, weather and sports. • Cabin Management Systems. • Content aggregation. Rockwell Collins continues to expand its content provisioning services as new products and customer feedback dictate. FINALIST GULFSTREAM ACHIEVEMENT: Gulfstream G550 and G4S0 programmes Gulfstream's GSSO entered service less than two weeks after certification. On 14 August 2003, Gulfstream Aerospace: • received FAA Type Certification for the new large-cabin, ultra-long-range Gulfstream G550; • received FAA Production Certification for the new aircraft, the first time in memory that both Type and Production certificates had been presented on the same day; • marked the first time that the PlaneView cockpit (incorporating Honeywell's Primus Epic avionics) and Gulfstream's Enhanced Vision System (EVS) had been included in the certification. Within two weeks of certification, the G550 entered service. Less than a month 'out of the box', Gulfstream pilots flew it around the world, establishing four city- pair records for speed between two points. According to Gulfstream, the aircraft can fly farther than any other in its class, accommodate up to 18 passengers, fly at up to .885 Mach and cruise at a maximum altitude of 51,000ft. In terms of technical advances, the G550's PlaneView system has supplanted the 'dials and steam gauges' technology that has dominated the business jet cockpit for the past 20 years, says Gulfstream. By incorporating advanced computer software, hardware and display technologies and marrying them with new infrared camera technology, the G550 PlaneView cockpit aims to reduce pilot workload while increasing safety. All flight information — navigation, aircraft systems, communication and pilot situa tional awareness — is designed to be just a cursor click away. The G550 also includes the Gulfstream Enhanced Vision System (EVS). Developed with Kollsman, EVS incorporates a specially-designed, forward-looking infrared camera that projects an infrared real-world image on the pilot's Honeywell head-up display. This enables the flight crew to see runway markings, taxiways and surrounding areas in conditions of limited visibility. It also helps crews avoid runway incursion and hazards not other wise easily visible. At NBAA 2003, Gulfstream announced the addition of the large-cabin, long- range Gulfstream G450 to its fleet. In developing the G450, Gulfstream shared technological advances developed and refined for the G550, such as PlaneView, EVS, enhanced cabin environment and upgraded electrical power and pressurisa- tion systems.
