History Began operations under the name Tasman Empire Airways (TEAL) with flying boat services to Australia. In 1961, the New Zealand government became the sole owner of TEAL and renamed the airline on 1 April 1965. Absorbed New Zealand National Airways (founded in 1947) and its subsidiary Safe Air with effect from 1 April 1978. In October 1989, Air New Zealand was privatised with shares listed on the New Zealand stock exchange. Purchased TNT's 50% holding in Ansett Australia in 1996 and in June 2000 bought remaining 50% from News Corp, creating a group with the scale of a world's top 20 airline. Air New Zealand and Ansett Australia became full members of Star Alliance in March 1999. In August 2000 Brierley Investments sold its "B" shareholding to Singapore Airlines which then owned 25% of Air New Zealand, since reduced. Ansett was placed into volun tary administration in September 2001 resulting in recapitalisation by the New Zealand government in January 2002. There are currently negotiations regarding a possible equity alliance between Air New Zealand and Qantas Airways.
