History Set up by the Afghan government and the Indamer Company of India, but the latter's 49% stake was sold in 1957 to Pan American. It later became wholly state owned. As a result of the collapse of the Kabul communist regime in 1992, internal fac tional fighting destroyed a large proportion of the Ariana infrastructure and aircraft. In October 1996, Pakistan provided a temporary maintenance and operational base at Karachi airport. Domestic routes were also relaunched at the time from Kabul air port. In 1999 UN sanctions forced the airline to suspend overseas operations, and in November 2001 it was grounded. However, the following month it started rebuilding operations, and in January 2002 sanctions were lifted.
