History Founded as Malayan Airways by Imperial Airways, Ocean Steamship Co and Straits Steamship. In 1957, Malaya became an independent country and the airline was restructured into a public limited company in 1958, owned by the federation of Malaya and Singapore, Borneo Airways, BOAC and Qantas. With the formation of Malaysia in 1963, the airline was renamed Malaysian Airways in November that year. On the separation of Singapore from the federation of Malaysia in August 1965, the governments of Malaysia and Singapore took over majority con trol of the airline from BOAC and the other shareholders. Within a year the airline became known as Malaysia-Singapore Airlines (MSA). In April 1971, a split in MSA led to the incorporation of Malaysian Airlines System Berhad (MAS). The new airline offi cially began operations on 1 October 1972 as the national carrier of Malaysia. In October 1987, the trading name was changed to Malaysia Airlines.
