History The company was formed as Vee Neal Airlines (named after its owner Vee Neal Frey) and began operating from Latrobe, Pennsylvania. The airline's operating certificate was received in 1979 and on 1 May 1980, the fixed-base operation was expanded to include scheduled air services between Latrobe and Pittsburgh with a Cessna 402. December 1983 saw the air line change its name to Jetstream International Airlines to reflect the fact it had just taken delivery of two Jetstream aircraft. A year later the operation moved from Latrobe to Erie, Pennsylvania. On 26 September 1985 the airline affiliated itself with Piedmont Airlines and on 1 August 1986 Jetstream became a wholly owned subsidiary. Following US Air's acquisition of Piedmont in November 1987, Jetstream began operating as Allegheny Commuter from the USAir hub in Philidelphia. On 1 July 1988 Jetstream became a wholly owned subsidiary of USAir and began operating in the colours of US Air Express, later US Airways Express.
