Directory: military aircraft 1997. Sweden has ordered a total of 204 single- seat JAS39A and JAS39B two-seaters, the first being delivered in 1999. Saab/BAE, the Swedish air force and FMV, the defence materiel administration, are consider ing a range of updates for the JAS39 Gripen which could be introduced to the multirole fighter by 2010. The JAS39D, a version of the JAS39B two- seater, could be used as an on-site battle man ager with an airborne tactician seated in the rear controlling the battle and managing information supplied through the fighter's datalink. Its other new roles could include suppression or destruction of enemy air defences and as an unmanned combat air vehicle flight leader. Radar producer Ericsson is continuing work on the ASEA radar. Development of an infrared search and track system is also proceeding. Other improvements for the JAS39C include replacing the three 130 x 150mm monochrome multifunction displays with 150 x 200mm colour displays and the introduction of an air- to-air refuelling capability. The first flight of a Gripen with colour dis plays was in July 2001. SCHWEIZER AIRCRAFT Schweizer Aircraft, Elmira/Corning Regional Airport, 1250 Schweizer Road, Horseheads, NY 14845, USA. One aircraft, with pusher and tractor Teledyne Continental GIO-550 piston engines and twin booms, has been flown. The US Coast Guard plans to convert two RG-8s to RU-38As, designed for covert, low-level, day/night patrol missions, for which it is equipped with Honeywell AN-215 X-band radar. FLIR and TV electro-optical sensors are also carried. Sepecat, Zone Aeronautlque Louis Breguet, PO Box 12, Velizy, Villacoublay, F-78140, France. The UK RAF, meanwhile, continues progressive upgrades of its Jaguars, which will remain in ser vice until at least 2008, although there has been speculation that the RAF may retire its fleet early as part of a budget cut back. RAF improvements include upgraded R-R Adour engines, Terprom terrain reference navi gation, secure radios, TIALD targeting pod, a helmet-mounted sight and ASRAAMs. Oman has a similar upgrade programme under way. Transport, electronic countermeasures, maritime recon naissance versions and an AEW aircraft with Thales radar have been identified. An updated version with a three-crew cockpit fitted with Honeywell avionics and new P&WC PW150 engines is in development. Shaanxi Aircraft is reportedly co-operating with Antonov on the development of a new Y-8 variant called the Y- 8F600. A prototype J-8II first flew in 1996. F-811M changes include a Russian Zhuk-811 radar, new cockpit with HOTAS controls, INS/GPS naviga tion, and MFDs and more powerful WP-13AIII turbojets. Weapons include Chinese and Russian AAMs and the Kh-31 anti-ship missile. The F-8IIM was originally intended for export, although the Chinese air force may also pur chase the aircraft. The J-8II remains in production as the J-8D for the Chinese air force. Almost uniquely for China, the J-8D has in-flight refuelling. A further developed aircraft, the J-8IIC, has upgraded avionics, including a multimode role radar that is probably a version of the Zhuk-811. It is expected to have a ground attack capability and has been shown armed with free-fall bombs, but is likely to incorporate a new FLIR/targeting pod to guide LGBs. An upgraded cockpit is dominated by two MFDs and a wide-angle HUD. Shenyang revealed a J-8-based Alternate Control Technology (ACT) programme at the 2000 Zhuhai air show. Shenyang says the pro gramme began in 1977, with construction start ing in 1988. According to the company, from 1992 to 1995 the programme benefited from "foreign technology input". The J-8II ACT uses small canards to induce instability. www.flightinternational.com FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL 25 31 MAY 2004 69
