World airliner census The data in this census covers all commercial jet- and turboprop-powered transport aircraft in service or on firm order with the world's airlines, excluding aircraft that carry fewer than 18 pas sengers, or the equivalent in cargo. The tables are in two sections, both of which have been compiled by AvSoft research officer John Wilding using the AvSoft ACAS database. Section one records the fleets of the Western- built airliners, and the second section records the fleets of Russian/CIS-built types. This year, the de Havilland Canada Twin Otter and Douglas DC-3 turboprop are also included. The Russian/CIS fleet data is based on infor mation from the Russian commercial aircraft register, which can sometimes show aircraft owned by the state to be returned to the state when they are not being operated - for example, while undergoing maintenance. Because it does not differentiate between air craft returned temporarily or permanently, some aircraft that have been temporarily removed from an airline's fleet and returned to the state may not be shown by AvSoft with the airline for which they operate. It should also be noted that Russian aircraft tend to spend a long time parked before being permanently retired - much longer than equivalent Western aircraft - so it can be difficult to establish the exact status of the "available fleet" (aircraft that could be returned to operation). The information is correct to July and excludes non-airline operators, such as leasing companies and the military. Aircraft are listed in alphabetical order, first by manufacturer and then type. Operators are listed by region, with any aircraft variant in brackets next to the opera tor's name. Outstanding firm orders are shown in parentheses in the right-hand column. Former McDonnell Douglas types that remained in pro duction after the merger with Boeing are listed under Boeing. The region is dictated by operator base and does not necessarily indicate the area of opera tion. Options and letters of intent (where a firm contract has not been signed) are not included. Orders by, and aircraft with, leasing companies are excluded, unless a confirmed end-user is known - in which case the aircraft is shown against the airline concerned. Operators' fleets include leased aircraft. Aircraft being operated on wet-lease are listed with the company flying the aircraft, rather than the airline for which they are being operated. Aircraft known to be parked are included in the fleet list. A12-month storage trend chart is included in the analysis, which provides details on the parked fleet. AvSoft classifies an aircraft as "parked" if it is known to be inactive - for example, is grounded due to airworthiness requirements, put into storage, etc, and when flying hours for three consecutive months are reported as zero. The exception is where the air craft is undergoing maintenance, where it will remain classified as active. However, aircraft awaiting a conversion will be shown as parked. The 2003 fleet sizes used to provide the previ ous rankings in the summary tables for comparison with the 2004 totals were also gen erated using AvSoft data. Technical data can be found in the two-part Commercial Aircraft directory (Flight International, 21-27 October 2003 and 28 October-3 November 2003).
