Directory i in 2002, while the UH-1s arrived at the end of 2001. The Colombian government has also financed purchas es of UH-60s. Some are armed, and were selected in preference to multirole versions of the USMC's AH-1W. An upgrade programme has also been agreed for at least 9 Mi-17s. One ex-Italian air force C-130H was acquired during 2004 and Spain is selling two C-212s to Colombia. Many fixed-wing aircraft types were acquired after confiscation in drugs-related operations. Fleet review Satena, a paramilitary airline, serves remote locations where commercial services are not viable. It operates Dornier 328s, C-212s, BAe 748s and a range of other regional transports. The Colombian navy air arm has a limited capability with only a handful of helicopters and a few fixed-wing liaison aircraft. Several private security companies also operate helicopters to help protect oil infrastructure from guerrilla attacks. Operational activity Government forces thwarted a coup in February 2003. Procurement No procurement is planned. Fleet review The air arm is based at the nation's capital Moroni and flies a Cessna 402B, SN-601, AS350B and three SF260W trainers. REPUBLIC OF CONGO FORCE AERIENNE CONGOLAISE (AIR FORCE) Instability from domestic rebels and spill over the crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo has involved the country's armed forces in low level counter-insurgency operations. Operational activity Remnants of the civil war militias, known as Ninjas, continued to fight government forces until a peace deal was signed in March 2003. Procurement The Congo's latest acquisition is an Mi-26 heavylift heli copter, although it is likely the machine is operated by a Russian company on the air force's behalf. Fleet review All its jets, however, are believed to be unserviceable, with most stored in the open. EU peacekeepers were deployed by air to the country's eastern border region in mid-2003 to contain ethnic violence. They have since been replaced by a 10,000-strong UN force. Operational activity Cross-border fighting continues in the east of the coun try but the air force has limited ability to be involved. Procurement Up to 10 Su-25s were delivered from Georgia and reports suggest that 22 Mi-24s have been ordered, with perhaps eight delivered. Libya has also donated MiG-23s. Its main combat type, the MiG-21, was initially modified, including integration of new weapons, by the Croatian aviation industry. Since the end of the Kosovo war in 1999, the former Yugoslav republics have been able to normalise diplomatic relations and military tension has considerably reduced. Croatia is pushing to enter the EU and NATO. Operational activity Routine training and patrol tasks are now the main activity of the air force. Procurement A further MiG-21 upgrade by Israeli companies has been on and off since the late 1990s, but in early 2002 Croatia signed a deal with Romania's Aerostar for 12 single seaters and for the purchase of four MiG-21 UMs for upgrade. The first examples have been returned to Zagreb. The aircraft that are not upgraded will be dis posed of. Fifteen Mi-8s and Mi-24s were also reported ly sent to Poland for overhaul and possible upgrade around the same time.
